Originally published in 1998, the first edition of The Dolphin And Whale Career Guide sold out of its initial print run in 2002. Since then, prices on Amazon for used copies have been priced as high as $200.
We think that's pretty silly. But since there's been a demand recently, work has begun on the second edition of the Guide. Much has changed since 1998. New organizations have appeared, some have vanished (one dolphinarium even got erased by hurricaine Katrina,) and the jobscape out there looks somewhat different.
One unfortunate but crucial change is that there is now one less species of dolphin to see. The Baiji (or Yangtzee) Chinese river dolphin passed out of existance somewhere in 2005 or 2006. Never before has a dolphin or whale gone extinct as a result of human activity. While scientists knew the Baiji was circling the drain for years, nobody thought they would disappear so quickly. If you have been wondering whether or not you can make a real difference, the answer is yes.
There are millions of ways you can help save the Earth. Even if you don't choose a "green" career, it is worth the effort to learn solid facts about habitat loss, pollution, and global warming, and then pass that information on. Write letters of concern to your Representative and Senators. Volunteer your time. The planet needs people like you now more than ever - all you have to do is get involved!
